Survey Students Honored

LAWRENCE--Four students from the University of Kansas were recently honored for their work at the Kansas Geological Survey, based on west campus of the University of Kansas.

Nate Wilke, a graduate student in geology, was awarded the Lee C. and Darcy Gerhard Field Research Student Award. Wilke is a graduate research assistant in the Survey's petroleum research section and has studied petroleum reservoir rocks in eastern Kansas. The award is named for Lee Gerhard, director of the Kansas Survey from 1986-1999, and his wife Darcy.

Julian Ivanov, a KU doctoral student in geophysics, was given the William W. Hambleton Student Research Award. Ivanov has done research and published on topics related to the accuracy of seismic methods of imaging subsurface rocks. His award is named for William W. Hambleton, director of the Survey from 1970 to 1986.

Jill Whitmer, a graduate student in the KU geology department, won the Frank C. Foley Groundwater Student Travel Award. Whitmer is conducting research on the levels of uranium and selenium in the Arkansas River in western Kansas. The award is named after Frank C. Foley, director of the Survey from 1954 to 1970.

Chris Heatwole, an undergraduate in the KU School of Education, was presented with the Norman Plummer Outstanding Student Award. Heatwole is a clerical assistant in the Survey's human resources area. The award is named after Survey geologist Norman Plummer.

The students were recognized in a recent award ceremony at the Survey. They received citations and cash awards.
