The map shows the elevations and contours of the earth's surface, along with a variety of other natural and manmade features.
For example, the Morton County map shows the approximate location of the Santa Fe Trail, which cuts across the county just north of the Cimarron River. This branch of the Santa Fe Trail was known as the Cimarron Cut-off or Dry Route because it cut across an area of intermittent streams and widely spaced springs. Point of Rocks, a landmark just north of the Cimarron River in the Cimarron National Grasslands, is also shown on the map. Other features shown on the map are sand and gravel pits, water wells, radio towers, gas pipelines, and airports.
The map was produced by the U.S. Geological Survey and are drawn at a scale of 1:100,000, so that one inch on the map equals about 1.5 miles of actual distance. Lines showing elevation are drawn in meters.
In addition to county topographic maps, the Survey carries more detailed topographic maps of the entire state.
