Mandel to Head Scientific Society

LAWRENCE--University of Kansas researcher Rolfe Mandel has been elected to head up the American Quaternary Association, a scientific society whose members study the past two million years of earth history.

Mandel is an associate scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey, based on KU's west campus, and an associate professor in KU's Department of Anthropology. He was named president-elect of the organization at its annual meeting this summer in Bozeman, Montana. He will begin a two-year term as president in 2008.

The American Quaternary Association is made up of about a thousand scientists who study anthropology, archeology, botany, climatology, ecology, geology, and other aspects of recent earth history.

Mandel is a geoarcheologist, focusing on the relationship between geology and the archeological record. He has written a number of scientific publications and contributed to a recent volume on Kansas archeology published by the University Press of Kansas.
