The field conference included visits to several energy production and transportation sites in eastern and south-central Kansas.
Stops on the trip included the La Cygne electrical generation station; the Clemens coal mine and mine-reclamation locations in Crawford County; oil drilling in the Burkett oil field in Greenwood County; the Texaco refinery, El Dorado oil field, Chase Pipeline, and Groendyke Transport in El Dorado; and the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station. The group was also addressed by Survey staff members and Dr. Charles Gay, director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.
"We wanted to give participants a first-hand view of energy production and transportation in Kansas," said Survey director Lee Gerhard. "The participants went away with a new perspective on the issues surrounding energy, information that should help as they make decisions about energy issues."
Participants in the field conference were Jim Clark, David Williams, and Kent Crisler from Wichita; Dyan Conway, Prairie Village; David Corbin, Augusta; Vaughn Flora, David Heinemann, Wayland Anderson, and Al LeDoux, Topeka; Frank Gaines, Hamilton; Jerry Karr, Emporia; Robert Krehbiel, Pretty Prairie; Wayne Lebsack, Lyons; Janis Lee, Kensington; Laura McClure, Osborne; David Nance, Pittsburg; John Prather, El Dorado; Randy Rose, Overland Park; and David Stutt, Chanute.
