Survey Students Recognized

LAWRENCE--Three graduate students from the University of Kansas were recently recognized by the Kansas Geological Survey for their contributions to the Survey's research and service programs.

The students were given citations and cash awards in a May ceremony by Survey director Lee C. Gerhard.

Samuel P. Perkins, Jr., a graduate student in civil engineering from Overland Park, Kansas, received the William W. Hambleton Student Research Award. Perkins was recognized for work in developing computer models of the flow of underground water, work that has been applied to the Rattlesnake Creek watershed in central Kansas. The Hambleton Award is named after the Survey's director from 1970 to 1986 and is given to a student in recognition of outstanding research contributions to the Survey.

Saibal Bhattacharya, a graduate student in environmental engineering from India, was given the Norman Plummer Outstanding Student Award for work in petroleum research. Bhattacharya analyzed records of oil wells as part of a study of a field in Ness County. The Plummer Award is named after a long-time Survey staff member.

Nicholas G. Stadnyk, a graduate student in geography from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, was given the Frank C. Foley Geohdryology Award for his work in water-related research. Stadnyk helped research and write several reports on small landfills in the state. Frank Foley was director of the Survey from 1953 to 1970 and was a specialist in water research.
