The meeting is hosted by the Kansas Survey, based at the University of Kansas, and sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey and the American Association of State Geologists. It will bring together representatives of state and provincial geological surveys, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The meeting will focus on the use of digital, or computerized, methods of developing geologic maps. Geologic maps show the age and type of rocks at the earth's surface. The maps provide information that is used in a variety of construction and environmental projects, along with water and mineral production.
"The conference will bring together people who are creating digital geologic maps in the U.S.," said Gina Ross, a cartographer at the Kansas Survey. "We'll focus on methods of map production and capturing the data that goes into maps."
John Davis, head of the Kansas Survey's mathematical geology section, will deliver the conference's keynote address. Attendance at the meeting is by invitation, and most sessions will be held in Nichols Hall on KU's west campus.
