WHEREAS, Geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to the safety, health, and welfare of Kansans; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences are crucial to finding and helping assure the appropriate use of the state's water resources, which are crucial to the state's citizens, to the state's economy, and to its natural heritage; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences are integral to finding, developing, and conserving the state's oil and natural gas resources, which contribute more than two billion dollars annually to the state's economy; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences are crucial to environmental and ecological issues ranging from water quality to waste disposal; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences provide assistance in preparing for and mitigating natural hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, droughts, and subsidence; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences help increase our appreciation of the state's scenic value, its landscape and geologic landmarks;
WHEREAS, earth science is crucial to understanding the Earth's history and age, and the development of life on the planet; and
WHEREAS, The earth sciences contribute to our understanding of and our respect for the Earth:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BILL GRAVES, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF KANSAS, do hereby proclaim the second full week of October, 1999, as
in Kansas and urge all citizens to join in this observance.
