Extracting Lithofacies from Digital Well Logs Using Artificial Intelligence, Panoma (Council Grove) Field, Hugoton Embayment, Southwest Kansas
Kansas Geological Survey
Open-file Report 2003-68

Petrophysical properties and fluid saturations are lithofacies-dependent. Permeability-porosity cross-plots by lithofacies show this quite dramatically with permeabilities having more than two orders of magnitude variation for a given porosity depending on lithofacies. Grainstones exhibit the best properties. Capillary pressures and corresponding water saturations (Sw) also vary significantly between lithofacies and gas column height. For 10% porosity and a gas column height of 300 feet, grainstones have an Sw of 22%, dolomite, 48% and nonmarine siltstones, 78%.
